working together to conquer lupus

Walk A Block

What is Walk A Block for Lupus?

Hundreds of people walked together in British Columbia and across Canada this May to raise funds and increase the awareness of lupus.  This year in celebration of World Lupus Day, many walks were planned for Saturday, May 10, 2008.

Port Coquitlam: This was Judy and Steph Leadbeater’s 8th year to participate in the Walk a Block for Lupus campaign.  83 people joined team “Walk for Steph” at Lions Park in Port Coquitlam.  After the walk everyone enjoyed a complementary lunch and had a chance to win great prizes.

More than 150 people gathered at the New Westminster Quay to spend World Lupus Day and participate in the 7th Walk A Block for Lupus. Supporters joined TEAM METRO VANCOUVER members and other people living with lupus to walk the beautiful tulip and spring flower line boardwalk. New Westminster Mayor Wayne Wright & Councillors Calvin Donnely & Bill Harper also joined us & completed the walk with members of the Surrey Lupus Group. Everyone was motivated to complete the walk & work up an appetite so they could enjoy the delicious pancake breakfast that Dean Nakamura & the Paddlewheeler Pub provided. Participants also received a carnation for completing the walk from Ellen & 99 Nursery & Florist. There was lots of excitement as people pledged money for the fabulous silent auction items & then eyed them carefully so that they would be the successful bidder. Kids faces were painted & crafts were made at the Kids Zone. Lots of questions were asked & answered at the Lupus information tent & many lupus items were sold. For many lupus patients completing this walk was like completing a marathon. We celebrated living with lupus & many inspiring lupus patients led the way showing that we can all make a difference in they fight against lupus. By walking together to conquer lupus, TEAM METRO VANCOUVER raised more than $13,000. Thank you to everyone for their support. This event could not have been possible without the generous efforts of the many volunteers. Hope to see everyone again next time.  Renuka, Provincial Contact for Surrey & Langley

Kelowna Walk for Lupus was a huge success!  We had a turnout of approx 60+ people and  raised $10,000!  We received super radio, television and print coverage!  Thanks to all who participated, generously donated and helped promote it!  Hope to see you all out next year.  Thanks from the bottom of my heart!  Laura– Ann

Trail:For the 5th year the “Womacks-Clark team” walked for lupus at Gyro Park in Trail.  They were very pleased that 60 people participated given that May 10 was also Silver City Days (an annual Trail celebration).  Thank you Carolyn for once again organizing this event.

Grand Forks: Fourteen people and two dogs participated in the Grand Forks Walk a Block for Lupus and enjoyed a social after at the Library.  A joyful noise filled the air as horns, drums and tambourines greeted the public!  Thank you to Shawna Schuh for organizing “Team Shawna’s Shoes” again this year.

The Walk a Block for Lupus held in Parksville was a successful, fun event.  The Parksville Warriors met at the Downtown clock and walked along the Island Highway to Tim Horton's.  Joining Eileen were members of the local Lupus Support Group, family, friends, work mates, children and even a dog.  Cars honked in support and the group handed lupus brochures to anyone who glanced their way!

Sechelt:  Walking for Lupus:  Braving the wind on the Davis Bay seawall, a number of community supporters came out to support loved ones and friends as they walked to raise awareness of the autoimmune disease, lupus.  Many have been living with the disease for 50 years or more.  Yvetter Fleming, left, province contact contact for the BC Lupus Society accepted a $3000 cheque from Angie Terrillon of the Gibsons Thrift Shop and walk organizer/supporter, Joyce Erickson, right.

Prince George:
The  Prince George Lupus Chapter walked the Ring Road at UNBC on Saturday May 10.  Ralph and Penny organized this great event.
